With the endless possibilities of animation, it’s sometimes excruciating to feel like you’re watching something that’s been done a thousand times before. I know there are only so many truly original ideas in the world and we all need to find inspiration from somewhere, but with a medium where anything is possible, I always have such high expectations (which are often quickly shattered!). So when something that feels fresh and inventive comes along, we need to celebrate it and appreciate it, in all of its glorious uniqueness. Umbra by Malcolm Sutherland is definitely one such film.

An explorer adventures into an unknown world, yet it seems that he has been there before.

The animation is all hand-drawn; a mix of drawing on paper and digital animation with a wacom cintiq tablet, assembled in After Effects 7 and edited in Sony Vegas 8.
