Nuevo Mexico

Film is, as they say, a visual medium in which you should ‘show and not tell’. Whilst many filmmakers walk the tortured line of building visuals to support sophisticated narratives, some simply want to show you cool looking shit.

I don’t know if the characters in the Scumbags filmmaking group’s Nuevo Mexico are playing out a test of loyalty, an act of retribution or some kind of fantasy to order scenario orchestrated by the guy sitting in the armchair in the middle of the desert, but I do know that Christian Cavazos directs these interconnected scenes with a pleasing visual flair. It remains to be seen if the Scumbags will give us a piece with more substance over style in the future, but for now I’m happy to be taken along for the ride.
