Created for the official release of Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy’s franchise, live action trailer Ghost Recon Breakpoint throws us headlong into an intense fight for survival in the chaotic heart of conflict. Directed by Paris-based filmmaker VELLAS who was an obvious choice for Paris production company Frenzy after their earlier collaboration on Médecins du Monde’s #ShutUpDeath campaign film. Watch it below, after which VELLAS explains how his love of the war genre drew him to the project and fuelled his large ambitions for the project.

I remember the day Capucine called me about the project. “Ubisoft” and “Tom Clancy’s” resonated in my head and my heart barely stopped. I wouldn’t say I’m a big videogame player, I do follow the industry moves, but I’m especially a huge fan of classic war movies. Black Hawk Down, Saving Private Ryan and Zero Dark Thirty were definitely my inspirations for this one.

I wanted it to be as big as a blockbuster war movie.

I knew two aspects would be decisive in this trailer: the characters – their psychological aspects of being thrown into a terrifying and tense conflict, where every decision could mean life or death – and the sound design – the contrast between the eerie quiet of the forest, trying to avoid detection at all costs… and when battle erupts, the deafening sound of gunfire and explosions, screams of pain that follow the gunshot wounds. The desperate running for cover. Most war survivors testified to being traumatized for years with the sounds of battle – all that filling the narrative with tension and high stakes that ends on a cliffhanger.

I’m not shy saying I wanted it to be as big as a blockbuster war movie and I’m really proud of what we’ve done and grateful the agency and Ubisoft gave me this opportunity. Hope the videogame community will enjoy it as much as we did making it.
